David Nycum was a local resident and active member of the YMCA of Hagerstown for most of his adult life. He met his wife Debble at the Y, through friends who set them up on a blind date in 1988. David played in the men's basketball league, played competive table tennis and racquetball, and began his love of pickleball at the Y. He also served on the committee to oversee the installation of the Y's outdoor pickleball courts. David became a compettive pickleball player and Professional Pickleball Registry (PPR) coach; he medaled in many tournaments, twice qualifying for the National Senior Olympics

Tragically, David collapsed on July 14, 2020, at the age of 63, suffered extreme brain damage, and passed away on July 26. His presence still is greatly missed by everyone who knew him. Shortly after David’s passing, the YMCA CEO requested that memorial donations be designated to creating the seating area at the Ys outdoor courts. She also asked Debbie Nycum to organize an annual David L. Nycum Memorial Pickleball Tournament. The first tournament was held at the YMCA on September 17-19, 2021, funding a growing endowment which will provide annual scholarships in David’s name for many years to come. As a result of our amazing growth, during the summer of 2025 we proceeded with starting our own non-profit, D&D Nycum Pickleball Project, Inc., not only to increase our scholarship giving but also to support additional charitable causes in David’s name.

The Heart Behind the Project: David's Legacy

David Nycum wasn't just a pickleball player; he was the spirit of the court. His passion for the game was infectious, but it was his unwavering commitment to lifting others up that truly defined him. This project is our way of keeping that flame alive, ensuring that his love for the game and his dedication to our community continue to make an impact.

A Passion for the Court

For David, pickleball was more than a sport—it was a way to connect. He spent countless hours mentoring and coaching new players, playing in many tournaments, and helping to build an inclusive pickleball community.

Impact Through Giving

David was a generous man committed to helping others both on and off the court. This tournament in his memory led to the creation of our scholarship endowment and will provide resources for young people for many years to come.

A Lasting Legacy

Today, every tournament hosted and every scholarship awarded is a tribute to David's vision. We are honored to carry forward his legacy of kindness, competition, and community support.
